Overview or Purpose
The Undi Tal Rejuvenation Project in Varanasi is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to restoring and sustainably conserving Undi Tal (Pond), aimed at transforming it into a vibrant sponge park that synergizes environmental conservation, eco-tourism, and community engagement. This 23-month project will commence with a 5-month phase focused on preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR), followed by 24 months of implementation support. The key objectives include reviving the pond's ecosystem to create a healthy water body that fosters biodiversity and serves as an ecologically sustainable space for the local community. Key activities involve the removal of unwanted aquatic vegetation to enhance water flow and quality, improvement of water quality through optimal nutrient balance, and restoration of ecosystems to support diverse aquatic life. Furthermore, the project will incorporate infrastructure and urban design improvements to enable sustainable management while engaging the community in conservation efforts to ensure long-term success. A qualified technical consultant will lead the DPR development, which will include advanced environmental planning and sustainable conservation techniques. By integrating scientific expertise with local participation, the project aspires to revive Undi Tal into a thriving natural resource that supports biodiversity, promotes eco-tourism, and enhances the urban environment of Varanasi.
